TEE TIME RAISES MOST MAGNIFICENT AMOUNT
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation (RCLCF) has been boosted to the tune of £6,000 after a charity golf day.
Organised and sponsored by Grant Thornton Isle of Man and Pringle Law Ltd, the event saw teams of four compete in a shotgun start at Douglas Golf Club with the Deanwood team, comprising Marc Harrison, Tim Calladine, John Caine and Mark Cooper, the eventual winners.
Established in the Isle of Man in 1991 by Thoracic Surgeon Professor Ray Donnelly, originally as the ‘Lung Cancer Fund’ and later renamed in the UK as the ‘Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’, the charity is involved in all areas of support for lung cancer patients and their families on and off Island.
Dennis McGurgan, Chairman of Grant Thornton, his wife Pamela Pringle, of Pringle Law, and Pamela’s son Cameron Pringle (the Godson of Heather Christian) were extra keen to sponsor the charity as it is supporting their close friend, Heather, who is being treated for stage four of the disease.
Heather has never smoked and is keen to raise awareness that this disease also affects non-smokers.
Dennis explained: ‘It was a super day and we are really appreciative of all those who entered the competition, sponsored holes, provided raffle and auction prizes and helped at our inaugural event. There was a tremendous spirit throughout the day and the round was keenly contested.
‘All the funds raised will be used to benefit lung cancer patients and their families in the Island, as well as research to help combat the disease.’
The day also included a buffet, prize presentation and charity raffle.
Dennis, Pamela and Cameron handed over the cheque to Heather at the Grant Thornton offices.
Pamela added: ‘We now hope the Grant Thornton and Pringle Law charity golf day will become an annual event in the local golfing calendar, competing for the Heather Christian Trophy.’
Heather expressed her thanks to the sponsors, organisers and all involved in making the day a success.
She explained: ‘As a lung cancer patient myself I am really pleased that the Foundation now has a presence on Island, providing information, advice and support to patients, their families and carers, in addition to raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and investing in much-needed research.
‘This event not only told people about the charity but also the work it is doing in the Island.’
The RCLCF’s new Isle of Man office, based at 58 Main Road, Onchan, will be officially opened in November to coincide with Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
